Ever thought on being a Vegan...??
Few days back i passed through the Central library and few ppl standing there gave me a flyer..It said about Veganism. Till then i just knew the dictionary meaning of Vegans(pronounced as vee-guns) which was like those who do not consume milk and milk products including meat. The effect after reading the whole flyer was that i kept on thinking about the whole vegan thing and searched a lot on internet too. The pictures shown there were so touching and disturbing i thought several times before drinking milk next day..!!

Being a vegetarian rather eggeaterian all my life...milk is like essential part of life. Cannot go without a glass of milk, cannot think living without it. I remember words like animal husbandry etc. used for animal farming in geography notes while in school. After leaving school never actually thought on these lines..where and how is the milk production happening etc. Except that once in Final year engineering we visited Amul dairy near ahmedabad where they just explained the processing and pacakaging of milk in India. The scenario is quite different in US than in India. While in India we know the Amul milk is a co-operative movement of several villages in gujarat, here in US its an wide industry, wide profit-making industry.
Milk production, eggs, meat etc. are produced at these countryside locations that are far from urban areas way too far...than a normal person can ever go there and see wht's happening. The milk production of a cow is increased in several tons of milk which results in drastic decrease in age (from 25 years to just 5 years). And at the age of 5 or 6 when the cow is not capable of producing milk it is ruthlessly killed for the famous hamburgers that americans are so fond of.
This very fact is so gruelling!! When i came to US i met a person who was vegan and i was like wht's the big deal in tht, why is she not consuming dairy products..must be insane :p But after seeing the cruel way they are treated..its so disgusting. They are a mere money minting press for them.Thinking how i can help this..well by turning a vegan itself. But is that gonna help reduce the act ?? Maybe if suddenly most of ppl stop consuming milk than they will come to know. Or probably the animal activists should get this into government notice, maybe they are already working on it. Practically speaking its tough for me to stop consuming the dairy products. There are several food options which they claim are healthy and nutritious as milk etc. You have soybean milk, tofu, soyabean cheese etc. but truthfully lil heavier on the wallet right now...In future i can give it a try for sure.
If interested can read more on it at www.vegan.org , its something i feel everyone should be aware of atleast.
Just felt like putting my thoughts here. My apologies if u feel ur time's wasted.

Hi Bhumi,
It's been six months since I stopped consuming milk/ tea/ coffee. Haven't been able to stop curd. That one guy's being tough! ;)

Hey dear that's a great Post...
It's real sad to hear that...
I'm also a vegiie...
I know these things are so yaaks... and disturbing but there is a huge demand...
Even in a lot of claimed Veg food there are non-veg substance...
infact in India too...
It's very difficult to do away with it...
If "animal activists" can draw political support than things might change...
Good 1 Bhumi...
Take care
Cheers
BTW... ur from Ahmd.. cool
hey, being a vegan is really easy! I craved milk for sometime after I went vegan, but then soymilk did the trick for me. In the begining, it won't taste that gr8, but now I can't go without soymilk for a day. And its cruelty free!!! Hey and Soymilk is not that costly also. Also you can get tofu for cheap.
Also by turning vegan, you will make a big difference! As they say -- boond boond saagar banta hai!
good luc.
